Assimilation effect

Theory in social psychology that focuses on desire to maintain balance between experiences and expectations by selectively accepting information consistent with expectations. Assimilation occurs when the stimulus differences among the parts are sufficiently small; if the differences are sufficiently large, the opposite phenomenon of contrast tends to occur. This theory may be used by the marketers in the context of post purchase dissonance experienced by the consumers.
